Revitalize Your Run: Spring Cleaning for Runners

by Na’Tasha Jones, Co-founder and Chief Content Officer

As the vibrant energy of spring unfolds, it's the perfect time to channel that renewal spirit into your running routines. Bid farewell to the remnants of winter (even if some of that colder weather is sticking around!) and welcome warmer days with a fresh perspective on our running journey.

We’re sharing tips to infuse new life into your runs via a spring running deep clean. Get ready to declutter, organize, and make room for new running triumphs and a revitalized mindset!

Storage Solutions: Tidy Up Your Running Space

Whether it's your closet, a designated running corner, or a storage bin for race memorabilia, organizing your running spaces and running keepsakes will help you remember all you’ve accomplished in your running journey so far, and will make going through them all the more enjoyeable. Invest in storage containers, wall displays or other trophy spots to store medals, race bibs, and running journals.

Create a system for easily accessing your gear so you can grab what you need and hit the pavement without a second thought. This might include lining up all of your running outfits and select shoes for the coming week to eliminate decision delays when you’re trying to get out the door, which is so much easier than having to dig through that one clean laundry pile that never goes away.

Wardrobe Purge: Out with the Old, In with the Bold

Take a critical look at your running wardrobe. Are those leggings getting stretched out and see-through? Does your favorite running shirt no longer have it’s original color and glory?

Bid farewell to worn-out or ill-fitting items for maximum comfort and confidence. No one wants to be distracted on a run by constantly hiking up their leggings, or by a too-tight sports bra pinching in the worst places.

Donate gently used pieces that no longer serve you to make room for new pieces, or in some cases, just less pieces–focusing on making most of your favorites.

Gear Deep Clean: Refresh Your Running Arsenal

Dig in and show some love to your current running wardrobe as well. Your trusty running gear has been through a lot, from chilly winter jogs to damp spring sprints. By taking good care of the gear you have, you can extend the life and performance of your workout wardrobe.

Start by giving your running shoes a thorough clean – remove the insoles, wipe down the exterior, and let them bask in the sunshine.

Toss moisture-wicking socks and sports bras into the wash, ensuring they're ready for the miles ahead. Don't forget to wipe down your hydration belt or pack and sanitize any accessories.

Something New

Notice how this tip comes after purging and organizing. You’ll want to really assess what you have and don’t have, and how much storage space you have before heading out for a whole new running wardrobe.

Whether you’re into colors that mirror the blossoms of spring or you’re an all-black style lover, treat yourself to some fresh and sleek new pieces for an instant mood boost, because nothing says "fresh start" like a sleek new running outfit.

Sound on: Update Your Running Playlists

RUNGRL’s Spotify Playlists will set the vibe for any type of run.

Tired of that same old song rotation? A musical refresh can invigorate your runs and make each stride more enjoyable. Refresh your running playlist by removing songs that no longer inspire or motivate you. Exploring new tracks and new genres can change the whole experience of your run (note: Beyonce is a whole genre in this RUNGRL house!). Consider creating themed playlists for different types of runs.

Tech Check: Update Your Running Apps and Gadgets

Ensure your running apps are up-to-date, and your smartwatch or fitness tracker is in good working condition. Explore new features or apps that can add a layer of excitement to your runs. A fresh tech setup can rekindle your enthusiasm and provide new insights into your training.

It’s also a great time to check the safety features of your apps and gadgets. Ensure your profile isn’t sharing too much personal information publicly, such as posting your regular running routes or even your home location. Check out who’s on your friends list in the app and remove any unknown or unwanted connections. If your app has an option to add emergency contacts or share running locations with a trusted friend, be sure to update those contacts and let those people know you’ve added them.

Training Plan Review

Whether you’re dusting off a tried and true running plan you’ve used before, or you’re in the market for something that may better fit your current lifestyle, it’s important to examine your training plan and make sure it’s right for your current goals.

Jobs, family, school, and other life changes, including being at a different level of fitness are all factors in how you should structure yourself for success. What may have worked for you a couple of years ago may no longer be the best starting point. Take a moment to assess and reflect, and don’t be afraid to consult with a professional running coach, trainer or physician for advice on where to begin.

Mindful Reflection: Embrace a New Running Attitude

As you declutter and reorganize all the pieces that fit into your running lifestyle, take a moment for mindful reflection. Nothing will ruin a new running commitment like a stale old attitude towards running. A positive mindset can be a powerful companion on your running journey.

Consider your running goals, celebrate past achievements, and set intentions for the season ahead.

The transformative energy of spring will breathe new life into your runs. With a decluttered space, revitalized gear, and a positive mindset, you'll be more ready than ever to conquer the miles ahead. Here's to a season of fresh starts and triumphant strides!
