More Seasonal Skincare Tips for Black Women Runners
by RUNGRL Staff
While the cooler temperatures may seem gentler on the skin, transitioning to fall and winter months requires a few adjustments in your skincare routine to keep your complexion glowing, healthy, and hydrated. Black women runners can face unique skincare challenges to tackle during their colder month training sessions.
Explore some essential skincare tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing, even under all those winter layers.
Cool-Weather Gear
Think about protecting your skin from the elements during your runs. Cooler weather can mean windy conditions, which can be harsh on your skin. Use a lightweight, breathable balaclava or neck gaiter to shield your face from the wind without causing overheating.
Hydration, Inside and Out
Fall may bring cooler weather, but that doesn't mean you should slack off on your hydration. Dryness on darker skin tones can leave an ashy look that's especially challenging to combat in the winter months.
But we don’t do ashy over here! In fact, staying properly hydrated is just as crucial as in the summer. The drier air can leave your skin feeling parched, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Water itself doesn’t have to be your only source of hydration either. Remember to incorporate moisture boosting foods like cucumber, watermelon, tomato and cantaloupe to help add and retain moisture through your diet.
Additionally, consider using a hydrating, non-comedogenic moisturizer to lock in moisture after your post-run showers. This helps prevent dryness and flakiness, which can be exacerbated by cooler temperatures.
Sun Protection is Still Essential
Don't be fooled by the changing seasons; the sun's harmful UV rays are still a concern. While the sun may not feel as intense as in the summer, UV damage can still occur. Continue using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days.
Additionally, the more melanin your skin has, the more likely you may develop hyperpigmentation any time your skin is injured or inflamed. This hyperpigmentation can linger and become more permanent without proper sun protection. Opt for a sunscreen that is suitable for your skin type to ensure proper protection without clogging your pores.
Transition Your Cleanser
As the air becomes drier, consider switching to a gentler, hydrating cleanser. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Look for cleansers that are sulfate-free and packed with moisturizing ingredients to keep your skin's natural barrier intact.
Exfoliate Mindfully
Exfoliation is essential for maintaining healthy skin, but be mindful not to overdo it. During the winter months, reducing the frequency of exfoliation can help prevent excessive dryness. Use a mild exfoliant once or twice a week to slough off dead skin cells and reveal a fresh complexion. Then be sure to moisturize afterward to help restore and protect the skin barrier.
Lip Care
Chapped lips can be a common issue this season. This is especially important during outdoor runs which can be unprotected in the cold. Combat dryness by regularly applying a moisturizing lip balm. Look for lip balms with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or beeswax to provide long-lasting hydration.
Embrace Skin-Boosting Ingredients
Consider incorporating skincare products with skin-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and antioxidants into your routine. These can help combat the effects of environmental stressors and keep your skin looking radiant.
Remember, taking care of your skin during the fall isn't just about aesthetics; it's also about keeping your skin healthy and comfortable as you continue your running journey. Find a routine that works for you and practice it as diligently as you practice training!
