The Freedom to Live Well - Juneteenth 2021
by RUNGRL Staff
When we talk about running, we often speak of the feeling of “freedom” associated with getting outside and hitting the road. As we think about the freedoms afforded to Black people this Juneteenth, both historically and presently, it is hard not to notice the gaps in equity that continue to plague our communities.
Not everyone has the same access and opportunities to freely pursue a happy, healthy lifestyle. Centuries of misinformation and systemic barriers make it difficult for even the most motivated to treat wellness as a birthright, as something we deserve. It remains an act of revolution for Black people, and particularly Black women, to take care of ourselves.
At RUNGRL, we are working to remove barriers and create spaces and opportunities for Black women to experience real freedom whenever, wherever and however they choose to run and practice wellness.
We do this through:
Information - RUNGRL is a resource for runners and runners-to-be, with focused content that speaks to all types of runners. The Relay, our expert-focused running content is led by certified coaches and pros. The My Running Hair initiative aims to bring attention to how we can reduce hair as a barrier to fitness. Coming soon, our new RUNGRL BDY program will explore how different training styles can help create stronger runners and increase our love for movement overall.
Inspiration - By highlighting the many amazing Black women that are currently crushing it and breaking barriers as pro athletes, marathoners, trainers and more, we show the world not only that these Black women can run and be well, but that you can, too.
Celebration - Through our digital connections and in-person events, it’s a celebration every time we link up! We pour into each other, both online and in real life, as an important part of building the community it takes to support Black women’s wellness.
It’s important that we continue to show up for our freedom and the safety to choose to be well. Help us grow this movement for Black women’s wellness together, on Juneteenth and always.
For us and by us,
