As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures cool down, it's the perfect time to take a closer look at the tools of your trade–your running gear. Fall training and race season offer unique challenges and opportunities, and how you gear up can make all the difference.

Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting your running journey, these RUNGRL faves can help you make the most of your runs as you turn up your autumn miles.

1. Layer UP for Changing Temperatures

Fall weather can be unpredictable, with chilly mornings and warmer afternoons. Layering is essential to stay comfortable throughout your runs. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, add an insulating layer for warmth, and finish with a lightweight, breathable jacket that you can easily remove if you get too hot.

One of the joys of being Black is that all these colors look great on melanated skin! While you’re taking in the parks or trails that showcase the best of autumn's beauty, grab some fall-inspired gear to put you in a mood as great as the color palette.

2. Choose Proper Footwear for Changing Terrain

Fall often brings wet leaves, muddy paths, and the occasional rain shower. Make sure your running shoes provide adequate traction and support for different terrains. Consider switching to trail running shoes if your routes include off-road sections. And don't forget to replace those worn-out shoes from summer training to prevent injuries.

3. Get Reflective Gear for Shorter Daylight Hours

As the days get shorter, it's crucial to stay visible during your runs, especially if you're juggling work, family, and daily pressures. Invest in reflective gear such as vests, hats, or even shoes with reflective accents. Additionally, consider investing in a quality headlamp with adjustable brightness settings for those early morning or late evening runs.

Not only does it illuminate your path, but it also enhances your visibility to others, making you more aware of your surroundings and ensuring you're seen by drivers and pedestrians alike.

4. Prioritize Hydration and Nutrition

Staying hydrated and properly fueled is essential for fall running. Cooler weather can sometimes trick you into thinking you don't need as much water, but staying hydrated is just as crucial as in the summer. Invest in a comfortable hydration pack or belt to carry your water, or try out hand-held running bottles if that’s more your speed.

Don’t forget to pack some energy gels or chews as well as snacks for longer runs.

5. Comfort is Key, Especially for Natural Hair

Maintaining your natural hair while running in the fall can be a challenge. As the weather gets cooler and the air gets drier, your hair may become more prone to breakage and dryness. Consider investing in moisture-wicking headbands or caps that protect your hair and edges and keep sweat away. This is especially crucial in the winter months, when you don’t have the outdoor heat to help dry sweat quickly. Look for options with satin linings to minimize friction and damage.

Of course you’ll want to refresh hair between workouts, then be sure to refuel your hair with a restorative mask to strengthen and minimize breakage.

6. Running Tech: Enhanced Safety in Dimly-lit Conditions

The arrival of fall often means shorter daylight hours and the challenge of running in dimly lit conditions. Safety should always be a top priority, and technology can be a powerful ally during this season.

GPS watches are invaluable tools for tracking your mileage, pace, and progress, enabling you to share your real-time location with trusted contacts—”trusted” being the key word here! This added layer of safety ensures someone always knows your whereabouts during your runs, especially when it gets dark earlier.

7. Balancing Work, Life and Running

For Black women distance runners, balancing the demands of work, family, and daily pressures can be challenging. Fall is an excellent time to reassess your schedule and make running a priority.

Consider setting realistic goals and finding a support system, whether it's a running group or a trusted friend who can help you stay accountable. Keep your busy life organized with a planner or running journal.

8. Don't Forget Self-Care

Last but certainly not least, remember to take care of yourself. Self-care is essential for every runner, and it's especially important for Black women distance runners who face unique challenges. Listen to your body, prioritize rest, and incorporate stretching and recovery into your routine.

Whether you get some luxurious soaking salts, or some restorative skincare, that recovery is what keeps you motivated to stay the course.

Remember, fall running offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and stay active. By paying attention to your gear, embracing the season, and focusing on self-care, you can make the most of your autumn training and race season.

Happy fall running, RUNGRLs!
